2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing

More Power from AMG’s Stonking V-8

Powering the SLS is a revised version of AMG’s now-familiar 6.2-liter 32-valve V-8. In the SLS, the engine makes 563 hp at 6800 rpm and 479 lb-ft of torque at 4750 rpm. Revisions to the engine for use in the SLS include a new magnesium intake with eight separate velocity stacks; two electronically controlled throttle plates feed the new intake. On the exhaust side, a new equal-length exhaust manifold reduces backpressure. Lubricating the engine is a new dry-sump system that allows the engine to sit low, thus reducing the center of gravity. But the engine doesn’t just sit low; it also sits behind the front axle line, an arrangement that is partially responsible for the SLS’s claimed 48 percent/52 percent front/rear weight distribution.

2010 Gumpert Apollo 650hp/627 lb-ft

Various louvers and slats provide air to cool the massive brakes and Audi-sourced 4.2 liter twin-turbo V8, which puts out an impressive 650 horsepower and 627 lb-ft. of torque. A Formula 1-inspired six-speed sequential transmission puts the power to the rear wheels and, thanks to its rapid-fire shifts, the Apollo hits 60 miles per hour in three seconds flat.
The Apollo’s chassis is more than just race car-inspired; it’s identical to that of the track-going version of the car. A tubular frame made of cro-moly steel integrates with a carbon fiber monocoque safety cell. Weight distribution sits at 42/58 percent to the front and rear, respectively, which Gumpert claims is the ideal weight ratio for a road-going race car.
Inside, it’s hard to confuse the Apollo with a luxury car. Though leather and suede wrap nearly every surface, those materials are mere covers over light-weight carbon fiber. What little switchgear is present is mostly used from existing Volkswagen and Audi products. An in-dash DVD player is standard, though most options are built-to-order in this tailor-made race car for the street.

2011 Mercedes Benz CL63 AMG 536hp/590 lb-ft

As with most AMG treatments, the styling changes are slight, but include a more aggressive front fascia, side skirts and prominent quad exhaust outlets.
Despite its 63 designation, the 2011 CL63 AMG will be swapping out its 6.2-liter V8 for the automaker’s new 5.5-liter bi-turbo unit. Standard power is 536 horsepower and 590 lb-ft. of torque, but those seeking even more from their ultra-luxury sports coupe will want to option up to the AMG Performance Package. Power in that configuration is up to 563 horsepower, while torque tops out a stump-pulling 664 lb-ft. Regardless of performance level, the 5.5-liter V8 is mated to a seven-speed SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7 automatic transmission with three driving modes and a rev-matching function.
Amazingly, Mercedes-Benz says that fuel consumption has decreased 27 percent, while CO2 emissions are down 30 percent. Look for a top speed of an electronically-limited 155 mph in standard form (186 mph with the upgraded package) and a 0-60 sprint of 4.4 seconds for the standard CL63 and 4.3 seconds for the AMG Performance Package model.
