Lamborghini's New 704hp V12: Operation L539

Lamborghini has revealed an all-new 60-degree V12 engine , 46 years after company founder Ferruccio Lamborghini unveiled the marque’s first V-12 in 1964.
Known internally as the L539, the new 6.5-liter engine produces 704 bhp at 8250 rpm and 509 lb.-ft. of torque at 5500rpm. Despite the increase in power over the outgoing L537 engine, the new V-12 meets EU5 and LEV2 emissions standards, says research and design director Maurizio Reggiani.

The new powerplant’s crankcase is made from an aluminum-silicon alloy and has an open-deck construction with steel cylinder liners. Displacement is 6498 cc, with a 95 mm bore, a 76.4 mm stroke and cylinder spacing of 103.5 mm. The short-stroke layout is especially good for high-revving characteristics and low internal friction. Particular attention was also paid to the bearings for the forged and nitride-hardened crankshaft.
The two 4-valve-per-cylinder heads are sand-cast aluminum-silicon alloy, each weighing just 46 lb. The pistons and connecting rods are forged alloy and steel, respectively. Maximum piston speed at 8250 rpm is only 69 feet per second, which Lamborghini says is considerably less than for the MurciĆ©lago’s previous power unit. The 11.8:1 compression ratio is relatively high. As expected, the timing of the intake and exhaust is continuously variable.

A dry sump with eight scavenger pumps sucks oil out of the lower bedplate fastened to the crankcase, reducing pressure and scavenging losses by around 50 percent.
Reggiani says he’s particularly pleased with the in-house engine management system consisting of a main ECU, a secondary “smart actuator” and two additional black boxes that function as “smart sensors.” The sparkplugs also act as ionization sensors to detect and control knock.
Mated to this new V-12 is Lamborghini’s Independent Shifting Rods (ISR), a 7-speed robotized manual gearbox that’s capable of shifting gears in 50 milliseconds, says Reggiani.

2011 Morgan Aero Super Sport

Designed and engineered in house, the Morgan Aero SuperSports is a lightweight aluminium sports car with a luxurious specification. The interior features a comfortable combination of polished hardwoods, hand stitched leather and electronic technology to create a driving environment that is efficient, ergonomic and sumptuous. In spite of all this opulence the overall weight of the car is still minimal so the car is responsive to driver inputs and economical to run. The unique way Morgan can achieve this is down to our use of aircraft style superformed aluminium outer panels and the skills of our craftsmen to hand finish the assembly of each car.

The car of course benefits from the lightweight aluminium Aero chassis which is adhesively bonded for class leading rigidity. Exceeding global crash protection standards, this is also the platform used by the Morgan Aero Eight GT3 currently competing successfully in the 2009 International FIA GT3 Championship. This chassis combined with the aluminium 4.8 litre BMW V8 engine and a choice of 6 speed automatic or manual gearboxes offers an unrivalled driving experience. No other automatic car offers such dynamic power transmission.

Such was demand for this model, that Morgan have taken the decision to produce the Morgan Aero SuperSports. A limited edition, the car makes use of two aluminium detachable roof panels. These can either turn the car effectively in to a coupe or when detached bring fresh air and the aromas of the seasons to the driving experience without undue wind disturbance to spoil the journey. The panels can be stored conveniently in the boot.
